The drug is to be taken orally: infectious-inflammatory diseases, provoked by the microorganisms sensitive a Chloramphenicol, including: abdominal typhoid, paratyphoid, dysentery, brucellosis, tularemia, whooping cough, flea-born typhus and other rickettsial diseases; trachoma, pneumonia, meningitis, sepsis, osteomielitis. For outward application: purulent impairment of the skin, furuncles, indolent trophic ulcers, second and third degree burns, fissures of nipples in breastfeeding women. For local use in ophtalmology: inflammatory diseases of the eyes.
Chloramphenicol is a multiplural antibiotic; it is active against gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms.
Posology and administration is individual. In oral administration a dose for adults is 500 mg 3-4 times daily. Single-shot doses for children up to 3 years of age 15 mg/kg, 3-8 years of age - 150-200 mg; over 8 years of age 200-400 mg; repetition factor - 3-4 times daily. The treatment course is 7-10 days. In outward application the drug is to be applied on gauze packs or directly on an affected region. On top a normal bandage is put, it may be butter paper or compress one. Dressing change is to be done in relation to medical conditions in 1-3 days, sometimes in 4-5 days.
Blood diseases, hepatism, skin diseases (psoriasis, eczema, fungus diseases); pregnancy, lactation, childhood up to 4 weeks (newborns), hypersensitivity to the drug components.
Chloramphenicol should be used for the treatment of the severe diseases, against which no other antibiotics are efficient. Most of such diseases require hospital treatment, that is why there is no reason to take this drug domiciliary. The only exception are the cases when it is needed to conclude the treatment that has begun in hospital, moreover it is necessary to monitor the blood picture.
Any parallel application of other medications together with Chloramphenicol is needed to be discussed with the attending doctor.
Symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea. Overdosage seldom is life menaced. If it is taken a bigger dose than the one ordered, see the nearest health care facility. Symptoms: hives, swelling of the ace, rash, faintness fit, severe itching, numbness or tingling.
Nausea, vomiting, liquid stool, irritation of mucus coatings of the mouth and the throat, dysfunction of blood formation and blood composition, psychomotor disorders, impairment of consciousness, vision and hearing hallucinations, paralysis of eye balls, impaired taste, decrement in visual and hearing acuity, disbacteriosis, superinfection (candidiasis, staphyilococcosis etc.), cardiac standstill (in children of less than 1 year of age), dermatitis, allergic reactions (skin rash, hives, angioedema), including those of outward application, local (burning, pain).
Chloramphenicol is counterindicated for use in pregnancy and lactation period (breastfeeding).
For patient whose professional activity requires alertness (including drivers) during Chloramphenicol therapy should refuse to fulfill their duties.
