Quetiapine
- Indications for Use.
Quetiapine is an atypical antipsychotic drug, neuroleptic. It is used for the treatment of acute and chronic psychoses including schizophrenia and manic episodes in bipolar disorders.
- Action
The drug demonstrates efficiency in the treatment of positive and negative symptoms of schizophrenia. Quetiapine reduces depressive symptoms and signs, reduces the symptoms of hostility and aggressiveness, it does not provoke a significant increase of the body mass.
- Posology and Administration
Quetiapine should be administered twice a day, the drug may be taken both during meal and regardless of meal.
Adults: a daily dose of Quetiapine for the first 4 days of the therapy is: the 1-st day - 50 mg, the 2-nd day - 100 mg, the 3-d day - 200 mg, the 4-th day - 300 mg. Starting from the 4-th day a Seroquel dose should be measured to a usual efficient quantization within the limits from 300 mg to 450 mg daily. Depending on a clinic effect and individual tolerance of the patient a dose may vary within the limits from 150 mg to 750 mg/daily.
Elderly patients: like other anti-psychotic drugs Quetiapine should be used with caution in elderly people especially in the starting period of the therapy. In elderly patient the starting dose should be 25 mg a day. A dose should be increased daily by 25-50 mg to the attainment of an efficient dose, which may be less than one for younger patients.
Children and teenagers: safety and efficiency of Quetiapine have not been studied in children and teenagers.
In patients with impairment of liver functions Quetiapine therapy should be started from 25 mg/a day. The dose should be increased daily by 25-50 mg up to the attainment of an efficient one.
- Counterindications
Hypersensitivity, pregnancy, lactation period. With caution should be used in arterial hypotension, epilepsy and epileptic attacks.
Childhood and early adolescence.

Caution should be taken in administration of Quetiapine to patients with cardio-vascular diseases, to patients with impairment of the function of kidneys and liver, in the cases when convulsion attacks are possible, in elderly patients.

- Overdosing
Drowsiness, weakness, dizziness, tachycardia and arterial hypotension.
In cases of severe overdosing there is possible a series of events resulting in coma or death.

On the part of skin integuments: rash, dry skin.
Others: pain syndrome (pain abdominal, headache, pains in loins and in muscles, in chest and in ear), infections of urinary tracts, fever, increase of the body mass.
- Pregnancy and Lactation
It is not recommended in the period of pregnancy. When the period of treatment breastfeeding should be stopped.

Quetiapine may provoke drowsiness that is why patients are not recommended to work with mechanisms that may be hazardous; also it is not recommended driving of vehicles and other gear.
