3. Indications for Use.

Trazodone is used for the treatment of a severe depression not provoked by other drugs, alcohol or severe stresses, likewise in the treatment of depression in people of advanced age suffering from organic diseases of central nervous system.

4. Action

This anti-depressive system is used for the treatment of a severe depression.
It cancels both psychic manifestations of anxiety (affective tension, irritability, fear, insomnia), and somatic ones (heartbeat, headache, pain in muscles, polyuria, desudation). It enhances the depth and duration of sleep in patients in the state of depression, it restores its physiologic structure, it removes a restless-depressive condition and sleep disturbances. It does not provoke addiction. It favors the restoration of libido and potency.

5. Posology and Administration

The drug is to be taken orally. The starting dose for adults is 150 mg daily in two intakes: 2/3 of the total daily dose is to be taken before going to bed (to avoid drowsiness and dizziness), and the remaining part in the morning or during the daytime, in divided doses. In case of necessity a daily dose may be decreased by 50 mg a day with intervals of 3-4 days up to the optimal performance.
The maximal daily dose for outpatients is 450 mg, the one for inpatients is 600 mg.
The starting dose for elderly patients and debilitated ones is 75 mg, if needed it may be gradually decreased with an interval of 3-4 days, but not more than to 300 mg. In mild forms of depression an average supporting dose is 150 mg daily, in moderate and severe forms it will be 300 mg daily.
If you are more than 60 years of age you need to take from 1/3 to 1/2 of a usual therapeutic dose. If the starting dose proves to be insufficient and it is needed to be increased, do it very slowly.
The starting dose for children of 6-18 years of age is 1.5-2 mg/kg daily in divided doses, if needed the dose may be gradually increased up to 6 mg/kg daily.
In disorders of libido the daily dose is 50 mg; in treatment of impotency in cases of the drop of libido in women the dose should be 200 mg daily, as a part of a complex therapy the dose will be 50 mg.
Do not take Trazodone in cases of anxiety or as a sleeping pill. Also do not stop to take the drug abruptly.

6. Counterindications

Hypersensitivity to the drug, pregnancy, lactation period, rhythm disturbance, tachycardia, myocardial infarction (early restoration period), frank disorders of liver and kidneys function.

7. Should Be Taken with Precautions, if…

Heart diseases, arterial hypotension, disorders of arterial pressure, kidney and/or liver failure, age fewer than 18.
Trazodone may enhance the performance of alcohol. It should be administered with caution in heart diseases.

8. Interface with Other Medications

In case you are already taking some medications ask your attending doctor about a possible joint use.
You should not combine the administration of the drug with some other medicine without a prescription of your doctor.

9. Overdosing

Symptoms: nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, dizziness, low arterial tension, loss of coordination, attacks of an epileptic form, pneocardiac reflex, respiratory standstill, aggravation of side effects. Trazodone may provoke in men a painful long-lasting erection of penis with follow-up impotency.

It should not be used in pregnancy and in the period of lactation.
