- Indications for Use.
Bactrim is efficient for the treatment of infections of airway passages (acute and chronic bronchitis, empyema, multiple bronchiectasis, abscess of lungs, pneumonia), urinary tracts (urethritis, cystitis, pyelitis, chronic pyelonephritis, prostatitis, gonococcal uretrithis). It is also used for the treatment of intestinal tract infections and other infectious diseases. Bactrim is also efficient in the treatment of septic fever provoked by bacteria sensitive to the drug. High efficiency of the drug in uncomplicated gonorrhea.

- Action
The drug is efficient against streptococci, pneumococci, dysentery bacillus, typhoid organism, colibacillus, Proteus; its action is mainly connected with disorder of microorganism’s formation of the growth factors needed for their development.
- Posology and Administration
The drug is to be administered orally, in adults and in children over 12 years of age usually are given 2 tablets (for adults) 2 times a day (in the morning and in the evening after meal); in severe cases 3 tablets 2 times a day are administered; in chronic infections 1 tablet 2 times a day. Children from 2 to 5 years of age are usually administered 2 tablets for children 2 times a day, children from 5 to 12 years of age - 4 tablets for children 2 times a day. A treatment course proceeds from 5 to 12 - 14 days, whereas in chronic infections it is longer and depends on the run of the disease.
- Counterindications
Counterindications: hypersensitivity to acting substances of Bactrim, diseases of hematopoietic system, comprised liver and kidneys functions, pregnancy. The drug should not be administered to children and newborns.
- Should Be Taken with Precautions, if…
With caution Bactrim should be used in children of early age. In drug therapy it is necessary to monitor the blood picture.
- Interface with Other Medications

- Overdosing
Symptoms of acute ovedosage: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headaches, dizziness, visual disorders; in severe cases – full disability of urethral system.
Symptoms of chronic overdosage: suppression of blood formation (because of the absence of folic acid).
- Side Effects
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, allergic reactions, nephropathies are possible, leucopenia and other disturbances in blood composition.
The drug should be taken under thorough medical advice.
- Pregnancy and Lactation
It is not recommended to use the drug during pregnancy (especially in the first trimester) and breastfeeding.
