Doxepin Hydrochloride
- Indications for Use.
The drug is used for the treatment of depression and/or anxiety in neuroses, alcohol addiction, organic diseases of central nervous system, psychotic illnesses (among them manic-depressive psychotic illness).
General practitioners have experience to use the drug for the treatment of duodenal ulcer disease, pre-menstrual syndrome, chronic pains in oncologic patients, skin itching, chronic hives.
- Action
Doxepin is efficient in the severe depressions which can not be provoked by administration of other drugs, by alcohol or emotional losses.
It may pass several weeks before you feel the drug’s performance. If you feel the performance discuss with your doctor a possibility to gradually reduce the dosage rate.
- Posology and Administration
Administration is individual. In moderately manifested depression and/or anxiety a starting dose will be 75 mg/daily. Further on an effective dose is to be chosen individually which is usually 75-150 mg/daily. A dose is to be increased gradually. In significantly manifested depression and/or anxiety an efficient dose may reach 300 mg/daily. In patients with minimally manifested disorders lesser doses may be efficient - 25-50 mg/daily.
Doxepin is to be taken orally 1-2 times/daily (in one-shot intake a dose should not exceed 150 mg). In sleep disorders the main part of a daily dose should be taken in the evening.
Do not smoke. Smoking may enhance cardio toxic performance of the drug.
Do not drink alcoholic beverages and do not take any medication that can provoke drowsiness.
- Counter indications
Glaucoma, tendency to urination retention, pregnancy, lactation, childhood (under 12 years of age), hypersensitivity to Doxepin.

Before you take this drug tell your doctor if you have or have had: medication allergy, alcohol dependence, asthma, split personality (manic-depressive illness) or schizophrenia, blood system disorder, epilepsy, stranguria or increase of prostate gland, glaucoma, cardio-vascular diseases, high arterial tension, kidneys or liver diseases, hyperactivity of thyroid gland, diseases of intestinal tract.

- Overdosing
The signs of overdosage: mental fog, severe drowsiness, fever, hallucinations, unrest and agitation, airflow obstruction, rhythm disturbance, unusual tiredness, weakness, nausea, dilated pupils, likewise: high or low arterial tension, loss of control over urinary bladder, pale skin, blurred vision, constipation, confused mental state, delirium or hallucinations, decrease of sexual function, speech difficulty or aglutition, pain in eyes, loss of consciousness, loss of balance, stranguria, jerking of limbs, unsteady gait, decelerated motion, insomnia, increase of breast both in men and women, loss of hair, hypersensitivity to the sun light, irritability, muscle jerking, red or brown dots on the skin, ringing or noise in the ears, skin rash or itching, edema of testis (in men), pain in teeth or gums, yellowing of eyes or skin.
- Side Effects
Dry mouth, nausea, vomiting, disorders of taste sense modalities, diarrhea, constipation, stomatitis, urination retention, yellow sickness. Decrease of the body mass, high perspiration, chilly sensation, general weakness, feeling of flush, dizziness, noise in the ears, headache, vision disorders, drowsiness, disorientation, hallucinations, convulsions, disorders of arterial tension, tachycardia. High or low libido, testis edema (in men), increase of lacteal glands (in women). Dependence and cancellation syndrome.
- Pregnancy and Lactation
The use of the drug in the period of pregnancy is possible in the case when a supposed favor of the mother exceeds a potential risk for the fetus.
In the necessity of the administration of the drug in the lactation period a matter to stop breastfeeding should be decided.
