Contraindications: This drug should not be used by any woman who is, who thinks she is, or who intends to become pregnant. Use of this drug during pregnancy has resulted in fetal abnormalities. Notify your doctor immediately if you suspect you are pregnant.
• This drug should not be used by persons who are allergic to it or to similar drugs such as captopril or lisinopril. Remind your doctor that you have such an allergy if this drug has been prescribed for you.
Warnings: This drug should be used cautiously by nursing mothers, persons with kidney disease, and diabetics. Be sure your doctor knows if any of these conditions applies to you.
• Persons taking this drug in conjunction with other antihypertensive or heart medications should use it cautiously, especially during initial therapy. Dosage adjustments may be required to prevent blood pressure from dropping too low.
• This drug must be used cautiously with agents that increase serum potassium, such as spironolactone, triamterene, amiloride, potassium supplements, and salt substitutes containing potassium. If you are currently taking any drugs of these types, consult your doctor about their use. Dosages may need to be adjusted. Your doctor may wish to test you blood periodically to check the potassium level.
• It is recommended that persons taking this drug for a prolonged period have periodic blood tests to monitor the effects of therapy.
• Contact your doctor immediately if you notice swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or eyes, or have breathing difficulties while taking this drug.
• If this medication makes you dizzy, avoid driving a car or operating potentially dangerous equipment.
• Notify your doctor if you develop signs of an infection (sore throat, fever) while taking this drug.
• Notify your doctor if you develop severe or persistent vomiting or diarrhea while taking this drug, since they can lead to dehydration.
• If you have high blood pressure, do not take any nonprescription item for weight control, cough, cold, or sinus problems without consulting your doctor or pharmacist; such items can increase blood pressure.
• Avoid prolonged work or exercise in hot weather, since excessive sweating can intensify the effects of this drug.
