3. Indications for Use.

The drug is used in arterial hypertensions and backward heart failure.

4. Action

Irbesartan decreases general peripheral vascular resistance, afterload on the heart, systemic arterial tension and pulmonary arterial pressure of blood stream.

5. Posology and Administration

The starting and supporting doses are 150 mg once/daily. In case of necessity a dose may be increased up to 300 mg once/daily.
The drug may be taken with food or fasting. Tablets should be swallowed in whole, to be rinsed with water.
Patients who suffer from kidney failure (without electrolyte metabolism disorder), compromised liver function and elderly patients do not need dose correction.
The drug is recommended to take every day approximately in the same time. If the drug intake is eventually missed you should not double up the next daily dose.

6. Counterindications

   – pregnancy;
   – lactation;
   – childhood and adolescence under 18 years of age;
   – hypersensitivity to the drug components.

7. Should Be Taken with Precautions, if…

The treatment should be carried out under arterial tension control.
With care it should be applied in dehydrated patients, bad heart failure and ischemic heart disease (the risk of myocardial infarction and stenocardia is enhanced). With care Irbesartan should be administered to patients who suffer from bilateral stenosis of renal arteries due to an eventual risk of development of a significant drop of arterial tension and acute renal failure.

8. Interface with Other Medications

Irbesartan is not recommended for use together with other medications without a doctor’s order. Otherwise a series of unexpected side effects may emerge.

9. Overdosing

Symptoms: tachycardia or bradycardia, excessive drop of arterial tension, collapse.

10. Side Effects

On the part of central nervous system: headache, dizziness.
On the part of digestive system: nausea, vomiting.
Others: sickliness, weakness, pains in the chest, cough, diarrhea, disorder of motion of digestive system, heartburn, dizziness, disorders of sex function, tachycardia, drop of arterial tension (to the extent of fainting fit when the body abruptly changes the position); dry cough, allergic reactions.

11. Pregnancy and Lactation

Irbesartan is counterindicated for the use in pregnancy. If pregnancy comes during the course of treatment the drug should be withdrawn right away.
If there is a need to administer the drug during lactation it will be well to resolve a question about breast-feeding cessation.

12. Driving

The drug has a series of side effects which are not compatible with car driving and other activities that require alertness.
