- Indications for Use.
Stavudine is an antivirus remedy for the treatment of HIV-positive patients (it possesses anti-HIV activity)

- Posology and Administration
A usual single-shot dose for adults and the children whose body mass exceeds 30 kg is 30 mg; for patients with the body mass of 60 kg and more a dose will be 40 mg. A daily dose should be divided into two intakes, usually with 12-hours break between intakes (30 or 40 mg twice daily).
Children of more than 3 months of age, whose body does not exceed 30 kg should receive a Stavudine dose 1 mg/kg twice daily, in case if the body mass is big an adult dosage rate should be used for them.
In cases of poly-neuropathy and the increase of hepatic ferments activity Stavudine therapy should be withdrawn. After side effects have disappeared the therapy will be resumed in a lesser dose: less than 60 kg: 15 mg twice a day; more than 60 kg: 20 mg twice a day.
In evidenced compromised kidneys function a Stavudine dose should be decreased in compliance with CK indications.
For the optimum blotting capacity it is well to take Stavudine at least one hour before meal. If it is not possible you may take the drug together with delicate food.
The time duration of administration should be determined by a doctor on an individual basis. Usually it is used in a long-term therapy (up to 2 years).
If you incidentally skip a contact with the drug, next time you should take your usual dose. Do not take a double dose to compensate the omitted one.

On the part of digestive system: dry mouth, pains in stomach, nausea, vomit, loss of appetite and, as a consequence, weight loss, diarrhea or constipation, liver disorder, pancreatitis.
On the part of musculoskeletal system: muscular and joint pains (athralgia, myalgia).
Blood compositional disorder.
Allergic reactions: skin rash.
Others: panting, respiratory infections, feverish states, pains in breast.
- Pregnancy and Lactation
Stavudine may be taken during pregnancy only on absolute indications, after evaluation of a supposed favor for the mother and a potential risk for the fetus, under a doctor’s supervision. If there is a need to use the drug in the period of lactation breastfeeding should be stopped. There is a professional recommendation to HIV-positive patients to give up on breastfeeding in any case in order avoiding danger of introduction of infection to the baby.
