Trade Names: Acnacyl Gel, Benzac, Clearasil, Oxy, PanOxyl preparations

Major Uses: Helps to reduce acne.
How it Works: Benzoyl peroxide stops a bacterium from breaking down sebum (a type of fat) in the skin to fatty acids which irritate the skin, thus causing inflammation and acne. It also helps to dry the skin.
Usual Dosage: Apply one to two times per day.
Common Side-Effects: Local irritation is a common side effect of this drug, as is drying and peeling of the skin. These effects are more common in people not used to the medication and if higher concentrations of the drug are used. Burning or stinging in the skin is a common sensation also. If this persists, then the preparation should be stopped.
Actions with other Drugs: Sometimes use with a sunscreen may lead to skin discoloration. Any cosmetic or other medication which dries the skin may add to the drying and irritating effect of benzoyl peroxide.
Pregnancy, Breastfeeding: There is no evidence of problems.
Special Features, Comments: This medication should not be used for more than a few weeks without medical advice.
