Dosage Forms: Suppository: caffeine, 100 mg; ergotamine tartrate, 2 mg. Tablet: caffeine, 100 mg; ergotamine tartrate, 1 mg (pink)
Use: To abort or prevent migraine headache
Minor Side Effects: Dizziness; headache; nausea; numbness; vomiting
Major Side Effects: Chest pain; confusion; decreased or increased heart rate; diarrhea; extreme thirst; itching; lack of pulse; localized edema; muscle pain in extremities; stomach pain; tingling in fingers and toes; weakness in legs
Contraindications: This drug should not be used by people with blood vessel disease, heart disease, high blood pressure, malnutrition, severe itching, liver or kidney disease, or infection. Comments: Cafergot P-B tablets and suppositories have the following ingredients in addition to those of Cafergot tablets and suppositories: Tablet: 0.125 mg l-alkaloids of belladonna and 30 mg sodium pentobarbital (bright green, coated). Suppository: 0.25 mg l-alkaloids of belladonna and 60 mg pentobarbital (sealed in blue aluminum foil).
• Other products are available which are similar to Cafergot, but they are not identical. Those products listed above which are identical may differ widely in price. Consult your doctor and pharmacist.
• For best results, dosage should start at the first sign of a migraine attack. Learn to recognize the first symptoms of a migraine attack. If Cafergot dosing is delayed for several hours after the beginning of these symptoms, it may not work.
