OKINAWA'S HEALING HERBS AND FOODS: HUCHIBA, OR MUGWORT
(Artemisia vulgaris, Ai Ye, Carline Thistle, Carlina vulgaris, Felon Herb, Radix cardopatiae)
Everyone at one point develops an upset stomach, and in Okinawa huchiba has always been there to provide relief. In fact, the elders tell us that in the old days huchiba was the only readily available treatment for stomach ailments in Okinawa. Now it's often blended with other treatments, including Western medicines. Huchiba, known in the West as mugwort (wort simply means "plant" in Old English), is usually available in liquid or tea form; the dried herb is used for cooking. Its leaves are dark green and it smells a little bit like rosemary. Some say that aside from curing upset stomachs, mugwort also strengthens the liver. Both claims need to be scientifically tested, but in Okinawa mugwort is becoming more and more popular as people are rediscovering traditional herbal medicines.
Folkloric claims. Mugwort's medicinal actions go well beyond stomach ailments. Folkloric claims include efficacy in treating asthma, bronchitis, the common cold, fever, headache, dysmenorrhea (painful menstruation), gout, epilepsy, gallstones, kidney stones, gastritis, tuberculosis, skin cancer, and wounds. Roots from mugwort are used in traditional Chinese medicine to treat neuroses, depression, irritability and restlessness, insomnia, and anxiety.
The evidence. More than 100 studies have been done on mugwort, many of them supporting its folk uses. One recent study supported mugwort's traditional role as a stomach protector, showing that it and similar plants reduced alcohol-induced stomach damage in rats by 47 to 76 percent. There are a few small studies to support mugwort's use in treating pruritus (itch) and atopic dermatitis, a type of psoriasis. Another study supported its use for decreasing postoperative blood loss, bacterial infections, and inflammation when used as part of an herbal preparation in postoperative bladder irrigation. The best evidence for the Artemisia class of plants, of which mugwort is a member, is for the treatment of infectious disease. Approval is pending in Europe for it as a new and effective treatment for malaria. Chemically active compounds in its seeds, fresh roots, and leaves are in the same class of compounds—terpenes and flavonoids—as those found in ginkgo biloba, green tea, soy, and soy products. These compounds, of course, are extremely beneficial to your health. Much more research needs to be done, especially in humans, before mugwort can be recommended for other medical treatments, but its future looks very promising.
Usage. Mugwort is most commonly prescribed by alternative practitioners for two conditions: stress (take 5 ml, or 1 teaspoon, tincture by mouth before bed or 15 mg, 0.5 ounce, of dried herb added to a half-cup of water) and poor appetite (1 to 2 teaspoons dried herb steeped for 5 to 10 minutes in 150 ml, or 0.75 cup, boiling water, then strained; 2 to 3 cups before meals).
Mugwort is frequently used in Okinawan cooking in vegetable pilaf dishes and as a soup spice. Because it eliminates strong odors, mugwort is a natural in fish soups, and gives a fresh spring scent to almost any other recipe. It's also great as a tea.
Cautions. Allergic reactions have been reported, especially in those with hay fever or allergies to hazelnuts. Those taking anticoagulants (blood thinners) should use caution. Mugwort is not on the German Commission E list for approved herbs because it may stimulate uterine contractions during pregnancy, so avoid it during this time.
The bottom line. Mugwort shows great promise. Use it in your cooking or drink it as a tea. Mugwort tea is available at Asian food stores in loose leaves or in bags.
